Did You know? Ostriches can live up to 30 - 40 years in the wild but under human care they can thrive for up to 70 years. They are the largest living bird species and belongs to the genus Struthio. It is known for its large size, long neck, and powerful legs. It stands between 6 to 9 feet tall and can weigh up to 250 pounds. Ostriches have two-toed feet, with the inner toe being much larger and equipped with a sharp claw, used for defense. They have distinctive long necks and small heads with large, round eyes, adapted for excellent vision. Ostriches are mainly found in variety of habitats including savannah, dessert and semi arids regions. They are flightless birds and can sprint at a speed of up to 70 kilometeres per hour making them the fastest land birds.
They live in groups called flocks typically consisting of a dorminant male, several females and their offsprings and feed on plants, seeds insects and small vertebrates.
