Special Notes
1. Which is the best month to visit Masai Mara?
The best Great Migration Kenya Months are from late June to October when the plains are teeming with wildlife. The wildebeest migration has already reached the Mara where they stay until October.
If you plan your visit to Masai Mara between July 15 and August 15, you have a chance to witness the spectacular drama of wildebeests crossing the river and fighting to escape the jaws of death.
The not-so-lucky ones get devoured by the ferocious crocs and other predators. In the Mara, wildlife viewing is good all-year-round, but the migration is the epitome of the safari experience!
2. Has the migration started in Masai Mara?
The migration in Masai Mara starts towards the end of June through to mid-October as herds of wildebeests travel from the Serengeti plains to Masai Mara. During this time, the Mara has greener pastures because of the rains.
The animals follow a set circular route which they have been following since time immemorial and pass through major rivers such as Grumeti River before they encounter the Mara River. The Mara River has at least ten crossing points on the migration route, all equally dangerous to the herds.
3. How do wildebeest know where to migrate?
The wildebeests know when and where to migrate based on pure instincts. Their decision to migrate is a natural response to weather; following the rains and the growth of lush green grass. When the dry season approaches in the Serengeti, the herds head towards the west from Olduvai plains, pause at the trio of lakes Ndutu, Masek, and Lagarja, and head north into Masai Mara National Reserve.
4. What month is the Great Migration in Kenya?
The best part of the Great Migration in Kenya occurs in July when massive herds of wildebeests are crossing the Mara River to pour across the plains. In other words, July is the best month to track and witness this spectacular natural event in all its breathtaking glory.
The crossing continues to August and early September when all the animals finally make it to Masai Mara.
